All Peeta could hear was his heart pounding in his ears. He had been awake for a few minutes now, listening to the people that had taken him milling around. It wasn't until he heard the name Katniss whispered around. His heart started pounding so hard that he could see it, only.. then it was a disembodied pick ax digging it's way into his chest. He knew who held the handle of that ax.
Waiting until all the voices died down, he started to move. He had to find that thing and kill it before the Capital won. He could still feel the vial stuff they pumped into him crawling around in his skin. Swarming and buzzing around inside him until it was all he could focus on.
This would all stop after she was dead, the only thing that mattered was avenging Katniss. Or was this really Katniss? Lies saturated every word she spoke to him. Maybe he just wanted to believe that she would never do this, in actuality there was know way of knowing what she had lied about at all. The only way to find the truth was going to be wringing it out of her mouth with his own hands. That was when he realized that he was standing in a hallway looking at her. He will himself to charge, but found himself pausing for a moment thinking this had to be a trap.

It brought her up short to run into him in the hall, before she even made it. But it also gave her heart a little jolt. He was up, he was walking.
"Peeta!"

Long nimble fingers wrapped around her pretty throat in a second. No time at all for her to have had warning of the attack. There seemed to be a faint glint of betrayal in her eyes. The betrayal was quickly replaced with spite. It distorted her face until it looked demon like Her pupil slowly creeping out into her iris like ink dissolving into water until they were solid black.
Then she started laughing a deep evil laugh that made him hurt at the very core of his being. This was not the first time he had heard this laugh. It was always present in his mind each sound bursting with shiny bursts of light. The sound made his fingers clamp tighter around her throat.
He was starting to wonder if it was really Katniss' laugh at all. Once strong fingers became useless. Why wouldn't it just all go away? He crumpled into a ball on the floor looking up at Katniss in hope for an answer. At this point he didn't care if she was a snaked tonged liar, he just wanted something.

But they were bigger, stronger, and so unexpected. She couldn't get her nails in, not the way she'd wanted to.
And then, suddenly, he let her go. She took in deep breaths, the cool air a relief, even as it hurt to pull in. Falling to her knees next to him, she took in deep breaths looking up to meet his blue eyes.
Lost blue eyes. He suddenly looks like a child.
"The hell was that?" She finally croaked.

"Five cups of flour, white like snow. Two cups of water, poured in slow..." What was the rest of the words? Suddenly he couldn't remember. The something was happening to dads face. It began to blister and bubble up and away. Like he was burning to death, like he did burn to death. Peeta started screaming like a child in the grip of the most horrific nightmare one could imagine. Eyes clamping shut, he started rocking back and forth slightly. This had to be a dream, he just wished he'd wake up.
In actuality he just sat on the floor and softly sang to himself in a soft child like voice until he screamed. He slowly turned his head up to Katniss, his eyes wild with fear.
"Help me." It was broken and barely audibly, but he hoped by some miracle she heard it.

This really wasn't how she expected this reunion to go. At all.
Finally, slowly, she keeled down before him. Keeping her body tight, ready to defend herself if need be, she reached out to run a hand through his hair.
"I'm here."

No, that wasn't true.
Was any of this true?
One thing was true, one thing he knew for certain, and it would never be changed.
"You're a liar." The words were cold and crisp as they left his tongue. Eyes, raising to capture her's, sharing the same icy qualities as his voice.

There was an under current of guilt, but Katniss' survival instincts were too well honed for that. She pulled away, only stopping when she felt the bigger man couldn't reach her easily.
"I never lied to you-" She stopped because that was a lie right there. "Not intentionally. Not to hurt you."

Or was it that they both decided to fake this love affair to win favor in the Capitol. To work their way in, with their separatist agenda, and seed it into the minds of the Capitol citizens.
No, he remembered, at least he thought he did. Haymitch had thrown up on himself and he had volunteered to clean him up. After washing most of the nastiness off of Haymitch Peeta looked him right in the eyes and proclaimed at Katniss was to win at all costs.
All he knew for certain was she didn't love him back.
Cold blue eyes stared into her as he waited for something, a light to lead him through the shiny darkness that was always threatening to engulf him.

No. No, it was her fault Peeta was like this, and she was going to fix it.
"It was...it was Capitol politics. For the Games. To save us...but I'm your friend, Peeta. We...we talked about this already, we dealt with it, remember? On the train, on the beach?"

The entire time he was in that arena he was either blindly fighting to save this pathetic girl, or running. So he ran.
As his legs remembered how to move He lunged out wrapping his arms around Katniss and dragging her into an open room. The door shut and locked behind him. It should give him enough time.

However, she didn't have much time to linger on it. She tried to back up and away, but he was stronger and faster. More so then her.
Screaming didn't even help, the air knocked out of her as his weight barreled into her. They were in the room before she could do much of anything to react.

They were both trapped now. Trapped together in the buzzing little desolate room. There were many things. So many thing, he wanted to do to her. Little bits of revenge, one slice at a time.
And now it seemed these people would give him his chance. No alarm sounded, no troops gathered around the door. Everything just went back to running as normal.
"Looks like you still don't have any friends."He said in a low, biting voice.

They knew. They were watching. And they weren't going to help her.
"Peeta...calm down."
She wasn't sure what to do now.
