Dande was so unsure right now.
She stood on the door step, shifting in her boots, wanting to knock on the door and wanting to bolt back down the street at the same time.
She'd found this addressed scribbled on a scrap of paper. And had decided to come, without asking about it. Because if she asked, she knew this whole trip would have been put down before she got out of the door.
But now she was actually here, all her courage was seeping out quickly. So before it could all go, she lifted her hand and knocked quickly on the door.
Maybe no one would be home.

When he opened the door his heart didn't fall as far as it usually did, he wasn't sure why, it was just one of Rhi's friends.
"Hi there." He said in a friendly tone, Rhi hadn't told him any one was coming, but kids just tended to show up on baking day.
"Come on in." He grinned big at the girl in front of him. Rhi had good taste, she was cute.

There were a few pictures around the house she had found tucked into hidden places. She would sneak them out and study them when mom wasn't home, and she knew every little bit about his face, but seeing him in real life...she felt like her heart was going to burst open. Like she was about to burst into tears.
She opened her mouth to declare who she was, and realized she couldn't get the words out. So instead she just smiled, and nodded, and stepped into the house. The house that was warm, and smelled delicious, and she was sure if she hugged him he'd smell the same way.

"So do you and Rhi know each other from school?" He hadn't seen her before, but there really weren't a lot of other options around here.

It took a moment. Not because she didn't know who Rhi was, but because she was dazed. And not thinking about her brother. She had been, on the way over...wondering what he looked like, acted like. But really she wasn't think about much right now but how perfect her dad, and this house, and everything was.
So Rhi, wherever he was, must be perfect too.
"Oh, no, I'm not..." She shrugged, suddenly shy.

"My son's friends usually come by on Saturdays because it's when we bake together. What can I help you with?" He hope he hadn't scared the poor girl half to death with his assumption. For all he knew she was just there selling things for a fundraiser of something.

and cried inconsolably afterand so baking just barely ever happened unless Dande had begged. All of this was wonderful, and she knew she must look like she was high, sitting here and grinning like an idiot, but it was all so perfect.
"I, uhm. I...well, it's complicated."
So perfect she couldn't gather up the guts to say anything. Why couldn't she?
Oh. Oh there it was. The little terror monster digging into her bliss.

"Where did you come from honey?"

She laughed, and it was horribly awkward. The little insecurity monster was building a nest in her chest and she was about to have a panick attack.
This is why mom left. Because he was perfect and they...weren't. And probably didn't even want her here. She was probably a bad, forgotten memory.
And he wouldn't even be a jerk about it. He'd give her whatever smelled so good, and a hug, and maybe a check which would be the worse part because then it would be all about money like everything else was, and send her home.

That would never happen to a young girl he could help again. He could almost feel tears welling up but he pushed them back.

She trailed off. Because it wasn't a complicated question at all. And then she smiled at him, hoping that would throw off her trail.

"I'm just going to take out the rolls and frost them. Make yourself comfortable, would you like anything to drink sweetheart?" He didn't want to force her into anything too painful. He smiled again and then walked into the kitchen to finish up.

"Soda please..." She said softly, before hurrying after him into the kitchen.

Jesus she had to look crazy, but she was so happy.
"Is there anything I can help with?"
no subject
"Hello beautiful." He said with a wink. It wasn't every day the girl of your dreams was in your kitchen. "And you are?"
no subject
This had to be Rhi. There wasn't any other option, even though the only picture she had seen of him he was just a toe head, rolly baby.
He had mom's grin. She wondered how mom would feel about that. About him.
"Hi. Uhm. Hi!"

Would this have been every sunday morning? Where would mom have fit in? Katniss could see her, sitting there. Happy. It was hard to imagine mom happy, though.
"I hear the cinnamon buns are choice."
no subject
"They're not the only thing cutie." Oh if only dad wasn't here, this frosting would probably taste much better on her.
Peeta was ignoring his son and poured milk for the kids. This poor girl was in some awful situation and now she had to deal with cheesy pick uo lines.
no subject
Her brother. Little brother. She wanted to hug him. A lot.
"Thank you!" Still all grins, she smiled up at Peeta as he set down the milk.
no subject
Peeta loved his son, he really did. He also wondered why he was more interested in politics than Broadway because he was the perfect ham.
"Dad really, everything covered, and if I go get dressed I'll miss hot cinnamon buns. Also I don't wanna miss a minute I could be spending with our visitor, that would be rude." Rhi smirked in his fathers direction as he took a bite.

Leaning forward, she poked Rhi's side gently, hoping she wasn't over stepping and boundaries.
"I really don't mind, it's ok."
no subject
"So, where are you from miss?..." He wasn't sure if he had asked this yet or not, but he was pretty sure he had asked her name and gotten ignored.
no subject
"Dande. From California."

Granted where they lived the ocean wasn't quite as accessible. But she would take road trips south often enough. And the beach was still beautiful and sometimes tempting.

"Do you surf? I've really always wanted too, but the water here is just a ripple away from placid, unless it's trying to kill you." He decided to move on to avoid looking like a creep.
no subject
He looked like the surfer type.
Maybe she could just bring him home. If she ever went home. Which was looking less and less likely.
no subject
"So what do you do for fun then?"
this icon unrelated, I just wanted to match.
Dande was rarely bored at home, but listing it off, it all seemed so boring.
"What about you?"
Fyi I'm playing icon roulette they arn't named yet.
Rhy seemed to pay him no mind and took a drink of milk casually.
"Well lets see, I really love swimming, we have a lot of really beautiful swimming holes around here a few that most people don't know about. I love being in the woods, I'll have to show you some time.My biggest passion, though, is for history and politics. I love going to museums, Dad takes me to D.C. every year for my birthday I'll pick a museum and spend days exploring it carefully, so I don't miss anything. I hope I don't sound too lame." He smiled again not sure how well his wooing was going. fair well he hoped.
no subject
Her mind was already running down museums she could take him to see in California.
"We should go swimming. Here. Maybe there, if you ever come back with me."
no subject
"That could be fun. Either could be very fun in fact."
Over his shoulder, his father rolled his eyes. He then smiled and winked at Dande, miming out choking.

Stuffing the rest of the delicious cinnamon bun in her face, she stood up.
"Will you show me around?"
