I'm not calling you a ghost, just stop haunting me

He was still numb. He had been numb since they'd all gathered last year. So it made it easier when his name was called to stay perfectly still. To not shudder or blink or cry out when those volunteering around him were first ignored, then silenced.

Instead he walked up to the stage, keeping his head high and his focus out, not thinking, not feeling as the escort helped him up the grand spiral of stairs. Not flinching as he walked past the row of past victors, so long for their district, but all focused on one right now.

Because they had to be filming everything. Of course they were. All of this was on display for everyone.

He held himself high as he stood next to the girl, a strong, older girl he didn't know, one who was counting her blessings right now, to be against someone so slight.

Subaru had a feeling it did not matter. He could be the strongest person in the game, and it did not matter. This message was clear and final.

The reaping ended. They were ushered in to say their last good byes. Subaru's father was too haunted to say a proper goodbye, his mother couldn't even bear to come in. His grandmother was the one who comforted him last, pressing a small metal charm into his hands before wrapping him up in her many layered, incense scented warmth. She told him not to give up, to fight. To come home.

When she left, he looked into his palm to see a bright charm, strung on a gold chain. A metal fish, one of his sisters favorite earrings.

Then he was being lead out, to the train, decadent even for the standards of District 1.

And of course, left in a room alone. No, not alone.

Were there cameras here, too?
